Define task:

  • Conferences with teacher

Identify appropriate resources and their locations:

  • Searches OPAC by subject
  • Differentiates between fiction and non-fiction
  • Distinguishes among selected resources (e.g., encyclopedias, dictionaries, print books, magazines, and newspapers)
  • Searches OPAC and WLS catalogs
  • Searches subscription databases (e.g., SIRS)

Gather, evaluate and Organize

information:

  • Takes information from teacher-selected resources
  • Differentiates between fiction and non-fiction
  • Interviews "experts"
  • Uses simple graphic organizers to record information
  • Interviews "experts"
  • Uses index and table of contents to locate information
  • Skims resources to locate relevant information
  • Uses graphic organizers to take notes/organize information
  • Paraphrases information
  • Records information needed for Works Cited

Think, apply and do:

  • Shares sources of information orally
  • Shares the answer orally and in writing
  • Forms a conclusion using teacher models
  • Shares results in assigned format
  • Completes a Works Cited including title, author, publisher, place of publication, and copyright date

Reflect on work:

  • Demonstrates awareness of the steps of the research process
  • Evaluates work using established criteria (e.g., checklist, rubric)
